THE DANGERS OF "SPICE" & MY EXPERIENCE WITH KIDNEY FAILURE AND ITS RELATION TO SMOKING "SPICE"

79

By Dave Nuttall

My personal experience with acute kidney failure and smoking the new craze "Spice" .

Just to paint a picture for the readers I was a very regular user of the easy to find and mostly legal drug "SPICE" or also known as "HERBAL INCENSE". It also goes under a large variety of marketing names as "Popeye,Krucial xxx,Da Bomb" the list can go on for pages. As a regular smoker of the product I felt a sense of freedom from laws & policies outlawing use and possession of marijuana both by state and federal laws and by policies of the workplace. The convenience of taking a small trip to my local tobacco store and the feeling of security of not getting my hard earned money taken from me by some guy claiming to "be back in 30 minutes with some weed" was a double bonus, that is until January 09, 2012 .

Over Christmas break two members of my family came to stay with me, my wife and son for a couple of weeks. Both family members also smoked Spice so as usual we shared a bowl and sat down to a relaxing evening in front of the t.v. Unknowing to us that the events that would soon happen would change our lives forever.

After my Christmas guests and I had consumed our share of our favorite "incense" known as "Krucial xxx" , we were sitting down in the evening watching t.v. and suddenly my epilepsy was set off and my whole life had now become a blur. After four Grand Mal seizures that felt very different than what I am used to and after biting a large piece of my tongue off and refusing to go to the E.R. for 24 hours my wife called for help. After a seizure there is usually mild vomiting but this time there was 24 hours of it and the whole time I refused medical treatment until forced by her to go to the E.R. (Extreme vomiting, confusion, loss of memory and irritability are just four of many signs of that I was showing unknowing to my wife at the time. This behavior was a side effect of the acute kidney failure that had begun its destruction the night previous. ) I experienced vomiting every 5-10 minutes. My parents drove us to the hospital so she didn't have to care for me and drive at the same time.

After arriving to the hospital and out of luck was admitted to the E.R. with no wait and was assign to my favorite nurse , my aunt Heather. After a short wait my blood test came back the seriousness of the situation had stepped up a few notches. By this time the trauma received from my seizures, the toxins building in my kidneys and releasing into my blood stream had stopped me from remembering much of my 4 1/2 day stay in the hospital, 2 of which was spent in the ICU and the remainder in recovery. I spent the entire time having my Renal system (kidneys) flushed with Intravenous bags of potassium, magnesium, calcium infused water .I was told by the doctor if my wife didn't make me come in I would have died by morning and later was told that I had a 70% chance of dying and that I had six hour to show a positive change or I should contact my friends and family. Still later I received better news that I might be able to receive dialysis and possibly should ask family for a kidney.

My wife has been "anti-spice" the whole time I was a user and would frequently tell me that it was bad and it will have long term effects, thinking with a clouded mind I disagreed. As time went on the financial effects became more obvious to her as I went through $200 to $500 or more a month. As in many relationships this deficit caused a hard to ignore problem and like any other user of a chemically based drug I put up a fight in return.

I have been out of the hospital now for two weeks and can still feel effects of my stupid decisions, I am still waiting for more blood tests to come to determine what percentage my kidneys will return to.

ANY INPUT ON THIS OR RELATED MATTER WOULD BE BENEFICIAL TO PUTTING A STOP TO THE SPICE INDUSTRY, GOOD LUCK TO ALL AFFECTED BY THE PRODUCT , AND THEIR FRIENDS AND FAMILIES WHO WATCH IT HAPPEN.

Sincerely , Dave Nuttall

"BATH SALTS"- ANOTHER ALARMING CHEMICAL TO BE AWARE OF ALSO SOLD IN SMOKE SHOPS WITH "SPICE"

I have no personal experience with this product but do know people who do and it is always compared to meth and cocaine with a distinct "twist" on it's effects. Below are a few links that can educate and warn people of this chemicals availability and dangers. This product is found at any place that sells "spice" , this I can verify since I have seen it and been offered it by the clerks at the smoke shops .

Comments, Opinions and Ideas to fight "Spice"

I hear more and more bad stories about spice, first thing you should do is stop using it for a while to see what your side pains do, if they go away it shows that the spice was starting to mess with your kidneys. you should schedule a doctors visit and tell them about this page and maybe print it out for the doctor to see, this is uncharted territory for the medical field. I was told at the hospital that they had detected an unidentifiable crystal in my kidneys and had 6 other cases just like mine but i was the only one that was straight up with them and helped them help me, remember that they aren't the law they won't have you jailed for being honest and you could be saving other people by helping them identify what is going on. I was very close to death when I went in and as my article states I was so out of my mind from the toxins in my blood that I had to b forced to go. when renal failure starts you tend to get really mad and well crazy, literally, my wife forced me in the car and saved my life. when the toxins get to high you will lose control of your self and thoughts, i dont remember half of my stay at the hospital still and sometimes a flash of a memory comes back . do something before it is to late and it is up to someone else to save your life, you can only handle kidney failure for a day or two before the damage is permanent or kills you. if you survive you stand a chance at receiving brain damage a life of dialysis liver problems ect. BE OPEN AND HONEST WITH YOURSELF AND DOCTOR!!! help them help you.

Hey I'm looking for some information on spice use and the effects it can have on the body...? I've been on probation for about 4 months and started using spice about that time. I had a lot of trouble stopping pot mentally and started using this. The first few times it just gave me in intense high, and rush. But after this time the pain on my sides...I think kidneys has gotten more and more noticible. I wasn't sure if the spice was the issue but I'm starting to think it is...I don't use much in a day, maybe a gram but i m looking for more info on people who have used it thanks for your time and please throw info my way

GO!!! I didn't think my situation was that serious. You might not even know until it's too late. Please go! It's better to be safe than sorry, and start chugging water to help your kidney function.

I didn't have acute kidney failure, but my kidneys are hurting me so bad. On a whim I decided to google spice and kidney and it looks like I need to go to the hospital.

I know the fake weed shit is bad for you, but you probably shouldnt be smoking it if you have serious health issues.

My brother had a bad experience on syn weed. he lives down the road from me, his son came to our house asking for help. I was 100yds from my brothers house and i could here him shrieking. he was writhing on the ground, making hooting noises, his eyes were HUGE. It was a very very scary thing to see. he was saying yup over and over again , just as i read in another article. he also repeated in a very childlike voice I love you for about 5 mins. That stuff is BAD BAD BAD, do not take it. I had a couple of bad experiences on it (high heart rate, short of breath) but nothing like I saw last night. I feel like I am experiencing ptsd.

Wait... You have Epilepsy, and you thought smoking Spice was a good idea?

Not sure I need to say anything else that your decision making process hasn't already pointed out.

Spice and Bath Salts are no free ride. Usually, when someone is trying to skirt the rules in the drug trade the result is neither as efficacious or as safe as the original. The "safer" drug is illegal and the more dangerous one is illegal. When one tries to game the system one often gets burnt (no pun intended).

Spice is sold down the street at the corner from me, and did write an article on it a few months back. The teens were getting a hold of it, and since than the county as stopped it from being sold at stores. The county I'm in now just said age 21. Fortunately like my neighbor you can send for free samples off the internet. He seems very addicted to it, but tells me it is bad stuff. Another guy I met told me it makes you delusional and halucinate. His wife stopped him just in time from opening a gun cabinet. I think some times with certain drugs the Government does stop people from harming themselves. An addict isn't going to ask himself whether he will have kidney failure, or if it will kill him. Their state of mind is not clear and fortunately with some drugs we'd just have more deaths if they didn't make laws. It is a person's choice, but like the teen next door if it wasn't available, it wouldn't be in his hands, or an addict's hand to hurt themselves.

Hi Dave,

My father went through renal kidney failure at age 42 and was on the dialysis machine for the rest of his 22 years of life. Thanks for posting this hub page on your experience. I have never tried Spice, but thanks for your warning.

Fair enough comment. I'm not really into spice or weed, but I'm totally against drug laws in this nation.

I do agree that it's "on you" or me, or whoever - and I think that's how it should be.

Thanks for your input and polls,

Freedom of choice, if you choose to damage vital body organs then so be it. If a grudge with the C.I.A.and Dick Cheney is worth a stay in the hospital then do as you wish, just remember they won't be there when you need a kidney transplant or pay for 3 -5 dialysis treatments for the rest of your life. Keep it natural not synthetic.

I'm against all drug laws...period.

The central "intelligence" agency has sold more drugs than any Mexican cartel, and then they arrest people for buying what they are selling, and throw them into private prisons so that Dick Cheney can make some more money.

Sorry, I can't go for that. I got a free sample of "spice" in the mail a year or so ago. I loved it.
